Or how to make the perfect one-pot chicken curry
By Joshua Hinton
We are made of the stories we are told, and the stories we choose to tell
A Place in the Sultan’s Kitchen (or How to Make the Perfect One-Pot Chicken Curry) isn’t your everyday theatre show – it’s part concert, part storytelling, and part home-cooked meal, and it’s part of the 2026 Taste Tamworth Festival.
Musician and theatre-maker Joshua Hinton takes us straight into his family kitchen, filling the stage with songs, yarns, and the mouth-watering smell of his grandmother’s famous chicken curry simmering away.
“…the perfect recipe for a wonderful night out…A pinch of cumin, a spoonful of laughter and a bucket load of cherished memories, this touching story of belonging and connecting with culture can’t be missed. THE SCOOP
Along the way he shares childhood memories and family folklore passed down the generations, transporting the audience from the backstreets of Sri Lanka and a schoolyard in Iran, to a farm in South Africa, a bustling Brisbane restaurant, and finally, his own home in Wollongong. It’s about family, love, loss, and that search we all know - finding where you truly belong.
And the best bit? Every ticket comes with a serve of (grandma) Mehmeh’s curry. Good food, good stories, and good company and that’s Tamworth to a T.
